When You Don’t See Your Superpower
It’s been a wild few weeks and during that time I have discovered something.
I love thinking.
I love sitting down and thinking.
I love learning and then putting the dots together.
I love having life-changing insights.
I love creating space for others to have life-changing insights.
I love seeing how different elements work together.
I love seeing how my clients think, too.
I love to mess with my thinking and challenge my thinking.
And I love to mess with and challenge the thinking of my clients, too.
When I was younger, I was often told that I overthink things.
When I was hired in my previous 9-5, one of my strong attributes was apparently that I was "detailed" and could "think ahead" well.
Later I was told I was getting lost in the details (I disagreed).
They had taken my very superpower and made it into my weakness.
Every now and then I still am told that I think "too much".
And maybe sometimes that's true because overthinking can sometimes be to my detriment and keep me in inaction.
But you know what?
Last week I decided to love that part of myself.
It’s a strength.
It’s something I do that not everyone does.
And no one does it the way I do it.
"Thinking" comes very easy to me which is why I never even considered it a skill.
It was just something I do.
Now, I love it. And I see it as a strength and I will move forward using it more consciously as such.
See your strengths
Sometimes you don’t see your strengths because you are too close to them.
Sometimes you don’t even know what you are really good at because it comes so easily to you and so you just brush it off as insignificant.
Sometimes you use your superpower in a way that’s detrimental and you hate it for that.
Sometimes your superpowers turn into the very thing that holds you back, sometimes it’s your very growth edge, sometimes it flips and actually can harm you.
But when you wake up to it, you can see it — and use it — as what it is: a superpower.
Today, think about what your superpower is – a deep skill you have, a skill that makes you YOU.
Then, think about the shadow side of it, the dark side.
What happens when you do it too much? What’s the cost of this strength? What do you NOT do because of it?
And then do nothing. Just gain awareness.
Sit with that for a while and see what unfolds.
