My Approach To Life Coaching

Sometimes, life can bring the most amazing and fulfilling changes, even if the way there is not always easy.

But what I have learned is that when we start playing bigger or start getting closer to the edge of the circle around us that encircles our comfort zone - that I when things get juicy.

We feel resistance and blocks coming up.

Our inner critic starts doubting us or explaining why we can’t do certain things. And fears come up.

We may think that all this is bad, or we think it is all true, or we think it is not important. But, in fact, that is what is untrue.

Because when we experience fear, blocks and resistance, that is when we have a chance to dive really deep and break through. By questioning our fears and using our blocks as stepping stones, we may just reach freedom and lightness.

It can be hard to break through these, and sometimes it is scary to open up old wounds just to explore what the resistance we feel about projects is trying to tell us, but it is where the magic happens.

And it is the kind of magic that I decided to facilitate for others.

And so, now I want to share what it would look like to coach with me. Perhaps you have been thinking for a while to work with a coach and are wondering what that would entail!

Well, I am so glad you are!

Coaching is all about bringing forth your innate talent and potential with the help of a guide. Coaching comes from the area of sports but it has made its way into business, wellness, health, and personal lives.

My areas cover mindfulness, happiness, clarity and wellbeing.

The art of the midwife

When I was in high school, sitting in one of my Latin classes, a term was dropped that has been floating around in my mind for many years and it may possibly be the only thing I remember from my 8-year long Latin studies.

And that is the concept of “Hebammenkunst”. This is the German word to describe the Socratic method, but the German term is just so much more meaningful. It translates to “the art of the midwife”, also referred to as maieutic.

Socrates’ mother was a midwife which is how this idea may have been sparked.

It is a form of dialogue, a way of asking questions in order to prompt critical thinking.

The idea is that this method tickles out ideas and insights already present in the person that is being asked the question, just like a midwife helps a mother give birth to a child.

This concept has stayed with me ever since I heard it this one time in class and now it makes sense.

I love asking questions, am the Questioner in Gretchen Rubin’s Tendencies and the Questioner is also my wing in the Enneagram.

Even my Human Design says, “your gift of questioning is meant for the outside world, not focused on trying to be perfect”.

So, there is that. I love questions and being curious about others.

So, the beauty is that you already have all the answers within.

You are and have already everything you need - even every single one of your experiences and emotions its purpose and wisdom.

It is just a matter of diving deep and exploring them.

Achieving what you desire

Everyone has a very specific and unique motivation to work with a coach.

It is generally about a goal that they wish to work on with someone who can guide them and motivate them.

And sometimes it may be about exploring or working on a particular thing in the present.

When I was working with Gabrielle Treanor, my initial goal was to strengthen my self-confidence.

A coach is there to help you the bigger picture and your innate wholeness.

Areas that I can guide clients through include, for example,

  • find clarity around your vision, awareness around your blocks, fears and resistance and create a plan for aligned action toward your goal

  • diving deeper into your self-awareness

  • introducing practices into your life that enhance your happiness and mindfulness through meditation, embodiment work, and activities that have been proven to be effective by centuries of spiritual journeys – and now science, too

  • creating an environment that allows you to experience deep happiness and mindfulness more easily and readily

  • working on your mindset, mind-body alignment, emotional mastery

  • slowing down (and seeing the value of it)

  • creating a time and energy sustainable approach and plan for your life and work

You are already whole

The thing is, you are already whole and complete and wonderful. We all are.

But our conditioning, expectations from society, parents, friends, and even yourself sometimes lead you down a path in life that just doesn’t feel right.

You may wonder what is wrong with you or why you are not enjoying what you do - after all, you chose it. Right?

Trust me, I have been there. You can read an honest and raw account of my turbulent 2020 here.

And the other thing is that that is completely normal to not feel your own wholeness.

After all, they are some of the most popular philosophical questions of humanity - What does it all mean? Am I enough? How to live a good life? How to be happy? What is my purpose?

Again, I believe that you already have all the answers to that inside of you.

You don’t need to look outside of yourself to become happy or to find your purpose. It is already all there. In your happy memories, in your shadows, in your successes, in your breath.

It is comforting.

You carry a whole universe with you, wherever you go.

So, you can consider yourself a paleontological excavation ground (in a complimenting, fascinating way) - and me your dashing, curious and compassionate facilitator, holding the brush. (Can you tell I love Jurassic Park? And Laura Dern?)

Important is to take all of it into consideration. To take a holistic approach. There are not just thoughts and there are not just feelings and there are not just past experiences and not just hopes for the future. It is all interconnected, embodied within you, showing up as words, bodily sensations, dreams, blocks, all of it.

And all of it is crucial. None of it needs to be overcome or tucked away or ignored or gotten rid of.

It is more about being compassionate and loving toward yourself.

So, that is how we are going to explore things.

Inner and outer goals

Along the same lines, I look at inner and outer goals.

By experiencing the sensations and the feeling that we are hoping to achieve with our goals in the present moment, we find ourselves much richer and complete. (In fact we don’t even need the goal to experience its bodily effects.)

By looking within, discovering our aligned goals, blocks, fears and dreams, and how they translate into sensations, we can feel exactly the goal already right now. That allows us to take bolder action, go all in, be compassionate with ourselves, be less attached to the goal and its outcomes when obstacles occur - because we are already experiencing the desired effects.

Isn’t that amazing?

Whatever goal you have, you can already make your body feel it right now.

It is a very powerful step in the framework of manifestation, too.

And that is why I look at inner and outer goals. Because you deserve to experience right now what you desire and because we cannot achieve external goals without looking within. And once you do, taking aligned action becomes a lot more organic and ease-filled.

There are always 3 steps

Awareness

I often talk about how first, there is always awareness. In order to create lasting change or reaching goals mindfully (this is a bit of an onomatopoeia, admittedly), we need to first be aware of ourselves, our sensations, emotions, background, fears, blocks, resistance, desires, and so on.

Gosh, we are complicated beings!

Acceptance

Next, there is acceptance. As I said above - none of this needs to be overcome or tucked away. Each and every single part of us wants to be seen. Sometimes it does not even need to be understood (this is for those prone to analysis-paralysis). Sometimes it just needs to be seen, loved and accepted. The moment we can pinpoint a thought or feeling, name it, feel it and allow it, it dissolves. So, through loving awareness and acceptance, we can clear what holds us back so that the next step becomes more easy, natural and powerful.

Aligned Action

And that next step is aligned action. But it doesn’t have to be daunting. Taking action is empowering - especially if you can already feel that you have all the desired effects within you. You can experience it right now because you don’t need to goal to make you feel whole (I think that rhymes!). And key to aligned action is to be unattached to the outcome, to trust that whatever outcome is created, it can serve us and will open up new wisdom.

This is why I also give my coaching clients homework. #backtoschoolfeels

Over to you

And yet it seems that I cannot fully express the deep and meaningful work that we will do together in a linear text.

The easiest and kindest way for you to find out more is by entering the draw to get a chance every month to win 1 out of 3 transformation calls!

Over to you! Tell me in the comments below what your biggest takeaway is from this post. It always makes me so happy me to hear from you!
